Future User Interface Design

Imagining the future of smart homes

Concept

Opportunity

Smart homes are bringing better connectivity and intelligence to many home appliances. Today, it requires users to use their phone as a remote control or use voice commands. However, it may be a problem when users want to keep things quiet or their smartphone is not nearby. The next-generation OS of smart home devices will combine interactive projection to make it ubiquitous.

Problems

Numerous screens in the house are placed in a fixed place or size

Do not feel like talking

Do not have a smartphone within reach

Goals

Everywhere can be changed into a smart home control for the user

Pops out for use only when needed

Interact with simple touch and gesture

User Profile

With the user profile, I am able to identify characteristics of the samrthome user along with their interactive behavior and their preferences.

Competitive Analysis

I use competitive analysis to see currently technology related to smart homes to find out the interaction and design they offer.

Sony Xperia Touch

Good point:

turns any surface into a touchscreen

the image looks clear on a textured surface in daylight

Bad point:

arm casting a shadow over the image

need a surface

Amazon Echo

Good point:

recognise different voices

Allows hands-free convenience

Bad point:

do not have any display to show visual images

not portable

Samsung SmartThings

Good point:

fast access features

Amazon Alexa support

Bad point:

no data graphs

restricted to an app to control homes

Microsoft Hololens

Good point:

immersive mixed reality experience

Bad point:

require a headset

physical side effects

Displair -Interactive vapour screen

Good point:

allowing taste and aroma

Bad point:

Bad screen resolution

the display moves whenever you put your hand through it

Inspiration

I got inspiration from films, concept design, and real-world developments. And also looked at the ways in which people are interacting with technology. Particularly the way it functions and the way it looks.

Conclution

I focus on designing the most common use function on the smart home device: control a device. By imagining a future user interface experience, I attempted to accomplish these three purposes: make every place in the home can be transformed into a smart home control, Ul emerges for use only when needed and invisible when no need, interact with simple touch and gesture.
